A Canva alternative you can keep, offline and free

OpenTempl is a free, open source design app for posters, social posts, slides, menus and invitations. It works offline, needs no account and has no paid tier. It is not affiliated with Canva.

Updated November 2026

If you are looking for a Canva alternative, the useful question is what you use Canva for. For making your own posters, posts and slides, OpenTempl does the job and you keep the files. For team workspaces, huge stock libraries and phone apps, it does not, and Canva is the better tool.

Is it better than Canva?

It depends on the job. OpenTempl is better in these ways:

  1. It works offline from the first minute and creates new designs offline. Canva's offline mode edits designs you marked ahead of time, for a limited period.
  2. You do not need an account.
  3. The files are yours, in an editable OpenTempl file and in open formats.
  4. Exports that Canva keeps behind a paid plan, such as transparent PNG and SVG, are free. See Canva Pro features in OpenTempl.
  5. It is open source.

Canva is better in these ways:

  1. The template and stock library is far larger.
  2. It has phone apps.
  3. It has team workspaces, comments, approvals and brand controls at company scale.
  4. It has AI tools and a content planner built in.
  5. It has years of polish and a very large user base. OpenTempl is at version 0.1.

Moving your Canva work over

In Canva, download a design as PDF or PowerPoint. Open the file in OpenTempl. PowerPoint files keep their text, shapes, pictures and notes. PDF text becomes editable text boxes. Fonts that are not available get a close match, and complex effects can flatten, so check the result before you rely on it. There is no direct Canva import.

Questions

Is OpenTempl a Canva clone?

No. It is a separate editor written from scratch, with its own templates and its own look. It does not use Canva's code, content or servers.

Is OpenTempl better than Canva?

For working offline, owning your files and exporting without a paid plan, yes. For templates and stock at scale, phone apps and team features, no. The lists above give both sides.

Can I import Canva designs?

Download the design from Canva as PDF or PowerPoint and open that file in OpenTempl. There is no direct Canva import.

Is there a catch?

It is a young project by one maker. There is no cloud sync and no phone app, and the desktop installers are not code signed yet. The Generate tab uses your own OpenAI account, which costs money for each image.

Which Canva Pro features are free in OpenTempl?

Background removal, magic resize, brand kits, bulk create, transparent PNG, SVG export, print PDF with bleed, version history and custom fonts. See the list.
