Pick Canva if

  1. You work in a team that shares folders, comments and approvals.
  2. You need a huge stock library, or video and music tracks.
  3. You make designs on your phone.
  4. You want built in AI writing and a content planner.
  5. You want the most polished, most documented tool, with years behind it.

Pick OpenTempl if

  1. You want to open an app and start, with no account.
  2. You work offline, or on a computer that blocks sign ups.
  3. You want transparent PNG, SVG and print PDF without a plan.
  4. You want files you own, in a format you can keep and open source code behind it.
  5. You like templates with a clear visual style: Swiss grid, riso, brutalist, Bauhaus, Y2K.

What each does better

Canva is better at scale: more templates, more stock, more people, more tools around the editor. OpenTempl is better at independence: it runs without a network, without an account and without a paid plan, and the exports are not held back. For one person making a poster, a post or a deck, that can be the whole decision. For a company with brand rules and ten people editing the same files, it cannot.
